Multi-Language Support in the Patient App

Patients can now choose the language they see the Patient App in, selecting from the set of languages your Organisation has enabled. This article covers which languages are available, how a patient changes theirs, and which parts of the app do and don't follow that change.

🌐 Languages Available

  • English
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • German
  • French

Wellifiy currently supports languages that read left to right. Right-to-left languages are not supported yet and will be made available in the near future.

Language selection is available in the Patient App (iOS and Android) only.

💬 Enabling Languages for Your Organisation

Available languages are configured by our team for your Organisation, so there's nothing to switch on in the Staff Portal. Language availability is tied to your plan and additional charges may apply.

To discuss which languages you'd like enabled, email support@wellifiy.com.

📱 How a Patient Changes Their Language

  1. Open the side menu using the burger icon at the top right of the home screen
  2. Tap My Settings
  3. Tap Language and choose from the list

The app updates straight away. Each patient's selection applies to their own account only, and isn't visible to Team Members in the Staff Portal.

🖥️ The Patient Web Portal and Staff Portal

Language selection applies to the Patient App only. There is no language switch in the Patient Web Portal or the Staff Portal.

Both of those are web-based, so patients and Team Members can continue using a Chrome translation extension where they need one. This release doesn't change that.

🧩 What Changes and What Doesn't

When a patient changes their language, the text built into the app translates. That covers almost everything they see: navigation, buttons, field labels, screen headings, and system wording.

Text stored in the back end stays in the language it was entered in, because only one version of that text exists. The main places patients notice this:

  • Daily Reading, Daily Quotes, Check-Insand Gratitude Journal prompts
  • Provider profiles, including bios, Specialities / Areas of Interest, and any Custom Fields
  • Content Module titles, descriptions, and the content itself
  • Forms and Assessments
  • Emails sent by the platform

🛠 Options for Back-End Content

You have three ways to handle this, and most Organisations use a combination.

🚫 Turn the Module Off

If you can't supply content in a patient's language, switch the module off so they don't encounter it in another language at all. Daily Reading, Daily Quotes and the Gratitude Journal can each be turned off.

To set this for a whole group, go to Patient Management → Patient Groups, open the group, then open the Patient App Configuration tab and switch the module off. The change applies to every patient in that group.

For a single patient, use the Patient App configuration widget on their patient profile.

🔤 Enter Two Languages in the Same Field

Where a field is free text, you can enter both languages one after the other with a divider between them. A daily quote can carry the English and the Spanish version together, and a provider bio can do the same. Every patient sees both and reads the one they understand.

This works well for daily quotes and readings, provider bios, and Content Module titles and descriptions.

One thing to watch: your Specialities / Areas of Interest list is Organisation-wide, so anything you change there appears for every Patient Group, not just the one you had in mind.

👥 Use a Separate Patient Group for Each Language

If your patients are already grouped by language, or could be, this is the cleanest approach. Set up a Patient Group per language, then:

  • Make only the providers who speak that language Bookable in the group, and enter their profile details in that language
  • Assign the Content Modules written in that language, with titles and descriptions to match
  • Turn off any modules you can't supply in that language

A patient belongs to one Patient Group at a time, so everything they see follows the group they're in.

📋 Forms and Assessments

Forms and Assessments are served from the back end, so an English Form reaches the patient in English whatever language their app is set to.

  • For Forms you've built yourself, create an alternate-language version and send that one to the patients who need it
  • For Assessments, email support@wellifiy.com and our team can translate an instrument and make it available as another language version

✉️ Emails

Emails sent by the platform are currently in English, regardless of the language a patient has chosen in the app.

A future release will let Organisations customise the text of platform emails, including at Patient Group level. That will make it possible to send patients email content in their own language.

💡 Best Practices

  • Decide early whether you'll separate patients by language into their own Patient Groups or run dual-language content in shared groups. Most of your other configuration follows from that one call
  • Where you can't supply Daily Reading, Daily Quotes or Gratitude Journal content in a patient's language, turn those modules off for their group rather than leaving them in English
  • Keep dual-language entries in a consistent order so patients learn where to look
  • Review provider bios and Content Module descriptions before you enable a new language, since those are the two places patients notice untranslated text first
  • Mention My Settings → Language during patient onboarding so patients know the option is there
